Empower Health (empower.ca / iamsick.ca) was created in 2012 after hearing stories of many Canadians who had difficult finding family doctors who were accepting new patients, and those who had difficulty navigating the healthcare system because existing online directories of healthcare services were often incorrect or out-of-date.

Empower Health has launched a number of initiatives over the years (iamsick.ca in 2012, myhealth365.ca in 2015, holidayhours.ca in 2016, myflushot.ca in 2019, and both c19.ca & ltc-covid19-tracker.ca in Spring 2020). All of these initiatives have a core focus of improving access to healthcare services by empowering patients and healthcare professionals.

Our IT infrastructure includes national healthcare directory data maintenance of all healthcare facilities/services/professionals, websites/apps that support patient navigation, seamless online appointment booking that integrates with primary care EMRs and pharmacy software, as well as APIs that power a number of digital health initiatives.

Our national directories include all COVID19 assessment centres, hospitals, medical clinics, medical labs, pharmacies, walk-in clinics, and dozens of other types of healthcare facilities.

In fall 2020, MyFluShot.ca was launched with real-time vaccine inventory awareness integrated with clinical and system navigation userflows, along with a national waitlist/notification infrastructure to inform Canadians when and where vaccines are available. The national flu shot locator included advanced searches for specific types of vaccines (ie. high dose flu shots), and seamlessly supported centralized online appointment booking at pharmacies, family doctor offices, walk-in clinics, community pop-up clinics in parking lots, and public health clinics. The IT infrastructure supported referrals, patient healthcare system navigation, real-time coordination by caregivers and healthcare professionals, and improved awareness of vaccine availability and access.
