Describe your company's current technology and solutions
SDS RiskAssist is cloud-based digital technology that reads Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) or United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (UN GHS) safety data sheets (SDSs) and collects relevant data. The data is then digitally compared to occupational and environmental ingredients of concern listed in provincial, national, international regulations as well as lists provided by world renown organizations such as the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). Lists can also be customized by the client.

Occupational or environmental hazards found in the SDS data are presented in easy-to-read tables for decision-making, risk assessment and risk mitigation. Further, the technology can be program to assign risk mitigation measures to an unlimited number of chemicals at the click of a mouse. The result is that workers gain 1-page hazard identification and safe-handling summaries for each chemical, supervisors gain clear knowledge and instructions for on-the-go chemical-specific training and managers gain metrics for continuous improvement in responsible chemicals management as well as metrics on employee use of the software to validate training. This information is accessible via desktop and mobile devices anywhere with internet access.

Finally, the data can be integrated with existing client systems, such as inventory, procurement and learning management systems, through the use of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). This ensures live updates of information between systems.

Are you aware of any current government challenges or opportunities that would be addressed by using your technology solution? Or a future need you can identify?
We have completed two successful pilot projects with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) through the Build in Canada Innovation Program.

SDS RiskAssist is valuable in organizations managing more than 50 chemicals. Examples of organizations that use SDS RiskAssist include; municipalities, educational institutions, laboratories, automotive, health/dental clinics, manufacturing and hospitality.

As the COVID crisis continues, please describe specific opportunities where your technology might support Canadian needs / government needs
To protect against the risk of fomite transmission of COVID19, high-risk facilities such as healthcare organizations and long-term care homes must use disinfectants to kill the virus on commonly used hard surfaces. These disinfectants, which are regulated by Health Canada, can present significant lung and skin occupational hazards. As well, the different types of products vary in the way they must be applied (spray or wipe) and their contact (or wet) time required with the surface, to kill the virus. Since there are over 400 disinfectants on Health Canada's list and availability of the products is a challenge, confusion can result for frontline workers, about how to ensure the different products are used correctly. Therefore worker training must be clear and easily accessible.

With SDS RiskAssist, once safe handling directives are established for each disinfectant being used, simple 1-page chemical summaries can be provided to workers for clear training to ensure they are protection both against the virus and excessive occupational exposure to the disinfectant.

Do you have any final reflections or comments?
Having gone through the process of applying for a Supply Arrangement and a Standing Offer as well as applying through the Centralized Professional Services Portal, this process makes much more sense for our product and services. Thank you for making the marketing of our software and service to the Government of Canada easier. We developed our product to help Canada and Canadians first and I would say that the procurement process has been a significant barrier to success for our small business.
